A Singapore Heritage Brand

With a century of heritage, Singapore’s F&B manufacturer and distributor Yeo Hiap Seng, commonly known as Yeo’s, has flourished from a family-owned business to a widely known stable brand across Singaporean and international households.

The success of the heritage brand is attributed to its employees, with many serving and committing to the business for as long as 40 years. As its biggest asset, Yeo’s recognises the importance to invest in its existing pool of talents and to dedicate its resources to employee training and development programs that would in turn, sustain the business growth.

The Human Resources – Learning and Development (HR L&D) function was thus formed in 2021, with its key objectives to 1) empower employees to learn new skills and processes, 2) develop and nurture potential leaders, and 3) improve employee performance and productivity. With the ever-changing business environments across markets, Yeo’s sought vitality to remain current, develop continuously and focus on staying one step ahead of the game for employees through its L&D efforts.

The Journey with e2i

Expanding its training horizons from its initial engagement of Internal Subject Matter Experts (ISMEs) within the organisation, Yeo’s embarked on the journey with NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) in 2022 under the Professional Development (PD) Programme. Developed to help employers upskill and train existing local employees, the PD Programme provides course fee funding for relevant approved courses.

Yeo’s was privileged to have sent 5 of its leaders and employees to a series of PD-related programmes such as the Hogan Assessments Certification, Emergenetics Associate Certification and the Singapore Institute of Directors’ Listed Entity Director (SID LED) Programme. The fulfilment of the programmes by the individuals bolstered Yeo’s hiring processes, expanded the ISMEs pool and deepened collaboration and communication across markets with applied learning from the certifications.

Building Capabilities through professional development supported by e2i

One of the trainees who had been awarded two certifications, was working with Yeo’s for almost a year. Talent acquisition and engagement formed part of her portfolio to empower employees in their learning and growth as an individual and/or a team. “Upskilling through the programme has helped me enhanced my capabilities and value-add to the business. One of my key milestones is stepping out of my comfort zone with the Emergenetics Associate Certification, supported by e2i. I am now able to conduct workshops regionally for Yeo’s and help strengthen team dynamics and positively impact the way teams work and engage with one another.”

Supporting training and development of employees similar to Tiffany is Mr Willis Phua, Group Director HR, also a trainee in the two certifications. “We must progressively expand our capabilities for our people and pursue advanced strategies to work more efficiently in the talent management field. Through the Hogan Assessments Certification, we have deepened our talent management process to improve hiring, identify talents and build stronger leaders in the workplace.”

Benefiting from e2i’s PD Programme for the SID LED Programme include Mr Yeo Keng Seng, Manager, Group Risks Management and Senior Management team – Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ong Yuh Hwang and Chief Financial Officer, Ms Daphne Heng. The programme equip the trainees with skills and knowledge to execute their duties as directors effectively.

The support from e2i has improved the productivity and efficiency of the business, giving a competitive edge for the business, leaders and employees alike. This will provide opportunities to progress as a forward-thinking organisation and remain relevant inspires Yeo’s to continuously work on its efforts to reskill potential and future leaders moving forward.

Surprising Benefits Of Enjoying Sugar Free Tea – Diabetics Take Note!

Animated GIF

Are you a fan of iced tea? How about bubble tea? It turns out that your favorite drink could be harming your health!

Drinking iced tea or bubble tea is not as harmless as it seems, since a single serving contains up to 10 teaspoons of sugar. But what if there was a healthier option? Sugar-free or no-sugar tea varieties are a better alternative for everyone, diabetics included!

Diabetes is a life changing condition. It’s no secret that diabetes is on the rise because of the ‘richness’ in our daily diet and the many tempting sugary treats that we give in to. Being hereditary also adds to the rise.

While there are many treatments for diabetes available today, most of them have side effects that can be just as bad as the condition they are trying to address. For example, many diabetic medications cause weight gain and mood changes in addition to the intended benefits of lowering blood sugar levels. But what if you could control your blood sugar through a natural method? And in a form that you like?

That’s where No Sugar Tea comes in! This drink has been shown to help manage blood glucose levels naturally without any adverse side effects. And because it is all-natural, you don’t have to worry about dangerous chemicals entering your body.

Health Benefits Of Drinking No Sugar Tea

There are many options for zero sugar beverages, however zero sugar tea has more health benefits than others:

Lowered Cholesterol

According to one study published by the “Journal of Nutrition,” drinking two cups of low sugar tea per day significantly lowered bad LDL and total cholesterol levels in people with type II diabetes after just six weeks. While high-sugar beverages, such as soda and fruit juice, can increase cholesterol levels.

The study also found that people who drank zero sugar tea had higher HDL (or ‘good’) cholesterol than those who didn’t drink any at all! In addition, the quality of their LDL cholesterol was better too.

Reduced Risk of Cancer

According to one study published in “Nutrition and Cancer,” drinking four cups of no sugar tea per day reduced participants’ risk for oral cancer by nearly 60 percent! The researchers hypothesized that this might be due to the high levels of antioxidants within tea which prevent tumor growth.

Another study published by the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” looked at data from over 21,000 people who drank different types of tea and compared them to others with no history of cancer. The researchers concluded that participants who regularly consumed tea had a lower risk of colorectal cancer than those who didn’t drink tea at all. Researchers hypothesized that the polyphenols (antioxidants) might prevent tumor spread during colonoscopies as well as protect against free radicals which can lead to mutations in cells.

Lowered Blood Pressure

A study published by the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” found that people with pre-hypertension who drank six cups of either regular, decaffeinated, or no sugar tea per day for eight weeks experienced lower blood pressure readings than those who didn’t drink any.

Researchers noted that this might be caused by the flavonoids of which arginine (an amino acid) can help improve endothelial function which in turn helps regulate blood pressure.

Reduce weight gain

Zero sugar tea contains no calories, which means it can’t lead to weight gain, a study by researchers at Louisiana State University found that tea extract played a role in reducing body fat and weight gain during exercise.

Another study published in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” reported that women who drank six cups (about three liters) of water or green tea per day for 12 weeks experienced significant weight loss compared to those who didn’t drink anything.

Furthermore, research on how no sugar tea affects diabetes levels was conducted by Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. The study found that drinking three cups of tea a day for 18 months lowered fasting blood glucose levels by 7%, reduced weight gain throughout the study by 10%, and improved overall glucose tolerance by 22%.

So Drink More Tea, The Sugar Free Type!

Something that ancient Chinese has known all along – tea is one of the healthiest beverages we can drink. Yet not all tea are created the same.

Yeo’s Sugar Free Chrysanthemum Tea, brewed with the same decades-old recipe and with the same detailed preparation just like it was first brewed by the Yeo’s family, has all the health benefits of a sugar free tea drink. It is also caffeine-free. A study published by “Food and Function” found that drinking decaffeinated tea before a workout might even enhance your endurance and performance.

Yeo’s Sugar Free Chrysanthemum Tea, part of our sugar free tea series, gives you the health benefits your body needs while retaining the rich floral taste of premium Hangbaiju Chrysanthemum flowers, and keeping our century old promise in ”Serving Up Goodness” in every sip.

Soy Milk and Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Animated GIF

Pregnancy is a time of joy and anticipation, but it also brings up many questions. One question that frequently arise is whether it is permissible to drink soy milk during pregnancy. Here are the facts on soy milk and pregnancy to help answer your questions.

What Is Soy Milk And How It Is Made?

Soy milk is a plant-based, highly nutritious, and delicious alternative to dairy milk. Soy milk is made by soaking dried soybeans in water and grinding them in two separate steps. The first involves grinding, which is full milling of the soybean to make it smooth. The second involves liquefying, a process that removes solids, leaving just the liquid behind.

The result is a creamy product with a nutty flavor that has been enjoyed throughout Asia for centuries. It is also popular in Western cultures as people began looking for vegan, dairy-free alternatives to cow’s milk for themselves or their children.

Soy milk contains many healthy nutrients including protein, calcium, vitamin D, and iron. It has also been linked to many health benefits such as lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

For decades, soy has been recognized as a safe food for children and women during pregnancy. Research on the benefits of eating soy while pregnant is still emerging but we do know that Asian countries with high rates of tofu consumption have some of the lowest rates in the world when it comes to preterm births, miscarriages, and infant mortality.

Soy milk comes in many forms, including flavored, sweetened (like chocolate), and unsweetened. Most varieties are fortified with calcium and vitamin D. There is also another variant called black soymilk that is higher in antioxidants and contains more nutrients than regular soy milk such as Vitamins B1 and B2. It is also lower in carbohydrates, sugar, and calories. Organic soy milk is also available for those seeking to avoid GMOs and pesticides.

Is Soy Milk Healthy For Pregnant Women, Nursing Mothers, And Children?

Pregnant Women

While the research is not conclusive on this topic yet, some researchers are concerned that consuming too much of these compounds could cause hormonal imbalances in children exposed to high levels while still in utero. The good news for pregnant women who are fans of soy milk is that the research has not shown any significant negative effects from consuming this product during pregnancy. The key here is moderation and variety – if you enjoy a glass of soy milk now and then during your pregnancy, that may be enough to reap the potential health benefits without putting your unborn baby at risk.

Soy milk is considered safe to consume during all three trimesters of pregnancy; however, there may be some limitations for women who have certain conditions or are otherwise advised not to drink it. Soy milk is not safe for women with estrogen-related cancers like endometrial, ovarian, and breast cancer because its high levels of phytoestrogens may interfere with their medication or worsen existing symptoms.

For this reason, it should be avoided by women who are at risk of getting these diseases until they consult their doctor about it.

Nursing Mothers

For nursing mothers, soy milk is an excellent choice because it provides the same amount of nutrients (protein, calcium, vitamin A, iron, and more) as regular cow’s milk does for their babies without causing any adverse effects to either party.

Soy milk is also lactose-free, so it does not cause the digestive issues that dairy milk can. However, if a nursing mother is allergic to soy products or has been diagnosed with estrogen-related cancer, she should avoid it. It may be best for her to drink regular cow’s milk instead while breastfeeding until the baby is weaned from breastmilk completely.

Children

Soy milk is completely safe for children because it does not contain any hormones and is a good alternative for children who cannot drink cow’s milk. It is also ideal for lactose-intolerant individuals and vegans because it does not contain any animal products or byproducts like whey, casein, eggs, etc. that are usually found in regular dairy milk.

However, soy milk should not be given to infants/toddlers because their digestive systems are still developing and can’t fully digest its proteins. There may also be some concerns about early exposure to estrogen in young boys which could interfere with their natural development. For this reason, it’s best to wait until the child is at least three years old before introducing any kind of soy milk into his or her diet. For more information about the benefits and risks associated with soy products for young children, speak to your pediatrician.

The main consideration you need to make if your child drinks soy milk every day is the amount of sugar he or she takes in daily through other foods and beverages like fruit juices, soda, sports drinks, etc. If your child does not eat a lot of sugar or other sweetened foods, soy milk may even help him or her maintain healthier levels of blood pressure and cholesterol later in life. The nutrients present in it can also help promote a higher bone density, which is especially beneficial to girls who are going through puberty.

How Much Should You Drink If You’re Pregnant Or Nursing

If you are not sure about the safety of soy milk for certain health conditions like cancer or heart disease, consult your doctor before drinking it. The same goes if you’re breastfeeding as well because anything that is consumed by a nursing mother could affect her baby’s health and development in some way.

However, in general, drinking soy milk during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or childhood is considered safe as long as it’s in moderation. It does not pose any serious health risks to women who are expecting or have just given birth.

For new mothers who are having difficulties purchasing their soy milk from physical stores, Yeo’s Soymilk is available for delivery at the largest eCommerce stores in your area. It can be kept at room temperature and is made from 100% non-genetically modified Canadian soy beans, which makes it perfect for you and your little one. There is also the black soy option that is higher in antioxidants with the same smooth, creamy taste.

So Mums and Mums-to-be, we hope you have a better understanding of Soy Milk now and can make a better choice today!

7 ‘Wonders’ of Drinking Chrysanthemum Tea

A picture containing grass, outdoor, field, green

Description automatically generated

First cultivated in China as a herb as early as 1500 BC, Chrysanthemum became popularized as a tea during the Song Dynasty AD960-1279. Chrysanthemum’s natural beauty blooms out in pale yellow to bright red, with a few varieties in green and purple. Throughout millenniums its beauty has been depicted in many different forms of media and its beauty is still revered up to this present day. A true beauty of sight, and a wonder of medicinal benefits.

Chrysanthemum tea is not made from tea leaves as you would expect. Instead, this infusion tea is made from flowers of the chrysanthemum plant, which belongs to the daisy family. The tea brewed from dried chrysanthemum has a golden hue and a mild, sweet, flowery flavor similar to chamomile, making it a delectable beverage. Its purported healing and strengthening properties make it an unexpectedly great complement to our diets; a fact that is well established and made renowned by the ancient Chinese.

For those who have yet to know about the power of chrysanthemum tea,  here are its 7 amazing benefits:

Anti-Inflammatory

Chrysanthemum tea contains an anti-inflammatory chemical known as a carotenoid, which is important for boosting your immune system as they provide an extra layer of defense against toxins that cause diseases. Chrysanthemum tea has the highest concentration of carotenoid in any food and it also contains flavonoids that act as antioxidants, which prevent free radicals from causing damage to your cells and tissues before they cause inflammation. These powerful antioxidants and minerals can help your body better regulate itself as well as reduce the risk of asthma and other respiratory problems. In fact many people in the Asian region suffering from arthritis have proven in studies that chrysanthemum can delay its onset as well as its severity.

Chrysanthemum tea thus makes a perfect match for the typical Asian diet which is heavy on the tastebuds and tends to be more “heaty”.

Improved Immunity

Vitamin C and A are both found in high concentrations within chrysanthemum, and both of these vitamins are crucial in maintaining a healthy immune system. Vitamin C stimulates the production of white blood cells and functions as an antioxidant to protect against free radicals. There are also quite a few minerals in chrysanthemum, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, all of which are necessary for a healthy immune system.

There are also many different types of Vitamin B found in chrysanthemum, including folic acid, choline, niacin, and riboflavin. These vitamins are necessary for the normal functioning of the body, ranging from developmental progress and growth, to normalizing hormonal levels and improving blood circulation.

Strengthen Bones

Bone density loss is a major issue that many people face, but rarely do people know that chrysanthemum has properties that improve your bones. The mineral content in this flower infusion has been identified by scientists to help improve conditions such as calcium imbalance which can lead towards brittle bone disease or even osteoporosis symptoms, in the most natural way as opposed to manufactured supplements that may have inorganic or artificial substances.

Prevent Chronic Diseases

Chrysanthemum tea is super rich in beta-carotene, which in turn breaks down into vitamin A to serve different purposes in the body. Vitamin A behaves like an antioxidant in many ways and therefore eliminates oxidative stress and damaged cells in organ systems around the body. Chrysanthemum has long been used topically for this reason, to clear up skin irritation, redness, and chronic conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. It also helps to generally reduce the signs of aging, as well as wrinkles and blemishes, thanks to the antioxidant content of the flowers.

Improve Eyesight

As mentioned earlier, chrysanthemum tea being super-rich in beta-carotene, which in turn breaks down into vitamin A, has always been closely linked with eye health, and as an antioxidant, it can protect against retinal neuropathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, and many other eye ailments, even as simple as a blurry vision.

Maintains Cardiovascular Health

Studies have linked chrysanthemum to lower blood pressure and relief from coronary artery diseases. By lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, some reports even say this chrysanthemum can be a long-term preventative measure for different cardiovascular issues, such as heart attacks and strokes, as well as atherosclerosis. Lowered blood pressure is mainly attributed to its potassium content, as potassium is a vasodilator.

Relaxes Nerves

The antioxidants and minerals present in the beverage contain many nutrients that are important for brain health while eliminating unnecessary stress hormones in the blood. The most notable of these is niacin, which helps boost your mood and enhances your mental function by improving the availability of the “feel good” chemical dopamine in your brain. It also acts as a natural sedative, resulting in decreased anxiety. This calming effect of chrysanthemum tea is further enhanced due to the presence of L-Theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid that helps promote deep relaxation. It also can calm your mind and help you stay focused making it an excellent beverage for those looking towards bedtime.

In addition, chrysanthemum flower tea doesn’t contain caffeine, which is great news for those who are light sleepers or simply want to avoid caffeine before bed.

Chrysanthemum Goodness

With so much goodness to reap from this legendary, healthful floral, it is no wonder that chrysanthemum has continued to entrench its strong presence in our daily diet.

Yeo’s Chrysanthemum Tea series is masterfully brewed using premium Hangbaiju chrysanthemum flowers with the same decades-old recipe that the Yeo’s family once diligently brewed for all to savour. Yeo’s Chrysanthemum Tea series comes in Original, Less-sugar and Sugar-free variants and continues to satisfy the taste buds and needs of consumers around the globe.

Managing Weight With Coconut Water

Wonders of Pure Coconut Water

Coconut water is all the rage now, and it’s easy to see why. Besides its irresistibly refreshing taste, it is almost a cure-all for everything from hangovers to fevers and is a gift derived from Mother Nature that is beneficial even to diabetics. Coconut water is a nutrient-packed powerhouse that you can easily add to your daily routine.

Nutrient Rich, Low Calorie, Controls Hunger

To lose weight, the number of calories consumed must be lesser than the number of calories expanded – a calorie deficit. Coconut water can help as it contains enzymes that control the hunger hormone ghrelin which regulates energy intake, aids digestion and absorption of nutrients so you will absorb more from your food. This helps reduce cravings which makes it easier to cut back on sweets or salty snacks while still feeling full longer after meals.

It is also naturally lower in calories and packed full of nutrients; a 330ml serving of Yeo’s 100% Coconut Water has only 50kcal compared to 122kcal calories in a 300ml can of fizzy drink!

Drinking coconut water before meals can help reduce food intake by up to 20%. So a simple change such as replacing sugary beverages with coconut water before meals could lead to weight management results without requiring any major lifestyle changes!

Boosts Energy, Prevents Muscle Cramps, Naturally Diuretic

Coconut water is a natural energy booster and helps promote better digestive health. The potassium and magnesium in coconut water helps prevent muscle cramps during exercise or periods of physical stress like hiking or running long distances. This means you get to go further, recover faster and achieve more. The electrolytes also help with hydration and can be a great way to stave off dehydration before, during, or after exercise.

It also serves as a natural diuretic that helps to flush out excess fluid from the body and regulate blood pressure. If you have swelling in your legs and feet from prolonged periods of standing, walking or sitting down such as working at your desk all day or traveling long distances by car or plane, coconut water will be an ideal choice of beverage.

Anti-aging Properties

Coconut water also contains antioxidants such as vitamins C and E which helps promote a healthy glow and reduce fine lines on the skin when consumed on a long-term basis.

Coconut Water Works Well With Dieting Programs

The benefits that coconut water brings makes it a staple for keto, or ketogenic diets. Drinking “more” doesn’t mean going on an all-coconut-water diet, however. It should be consumed in addition to healthier foods like fruits and vegetables that are full of fiber and nutrients but lower in calories. What it does offer is an easy way to manage one’s weight without feeling hungry all the time, and this can help you maintain your new lifestyle long-term.

By drinking two glasses of coconut water daily as either an appetizer or as part of a meal replacement shake, you’ll notice less bloating overall because your kidneys will spend lesser time filtering out waste products and you will lose those unwanted pounds naturally.

The Wonder Water Has It All

With so many wonderful benefits to offer, it is no wonder that Coconut water is all the rage now. Yeo’s 100% Coconut Water is a pure gift from Mother Nature embraced with all the goodness of coconuts without you having to painstakingly crack them open one by one. It is truly a wonder water that lives up to Yeo’s promise of “Serving Up Goodness” in every sip.
